Virginia Insurance Continuing Education Courses and Requirements
Courses Available
Required Hours
• Virginia licensed producers holding one license are required to take 16 hours of CE, including 3 hours of Ethics, every 2 years and is based upon the licensees’ date of birth (month and year.)
• Virginia licensed producers licensed in two or more lines of authority are required to take 24 hours of CE, including 3 hours of Ethics, every 2 years. At least 8 credits must be specific to each license type.
Virginia allows excess Ethics credits to be applied to cover other CE requirements in the renewal period. Any remaining credits will be carried forward into the next renewal period and applied to either the Ethics or other CE requirements. Producers may take no more than 75% of the credits required for compliance from courses sponsored by insurance agencies or companies. Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period.
NOTE: Be sure to complete all of your CE credit hours BEFORE submitting your license renewal application.
Category Restrictions
Producers must take CE courses for the license type that they hold. If more than one license is held, the producer must take at least 8 hours of CE credit per license held. CE credits awarded for Other General Insurance (OGI) topics will be used to meet any license-specific requirement but will not meet the Ethics requirement.
Special Training
LONG-TERM CARE PARTNERSHIP TRAINING
Before a producer can sell or solicit Long-Term Care Insurance, they must complete a state approved 8-hour course in Long-Term Care Partnership Training, 2 hours of which must be Virginia-specific content. Producers must then complete a 4-hour ongoing training requirement every 24 months following the initial completion date of the 8-hour training and 2 of those hours must be Virginia-specific content.
ANNUITY BEST INTEREST TRAINING
Virginia license producers must complete a one-time state approved 4-hour Annuity Suitability Best Interest course before selling, soliciting or negotiating any annuity products.
FLOOD INSURANCE TRAINING
Virginia licensed Property/Casualty and Personal Lines producers who sell National Flood Insurance Policies are required to take a one-time 3-hour course on Flood Insurance.
Course Presentation
- PROGRESSIVE – Licensees must progress through the curriculum by topic.
- CERTIFICATE EXAM – Licensees are required to pass the certificate exam with a score of 70% or better.
- STUDY BY TOPIC QUIZZES – EducUp requires that all Study by Topic quizzes be passed with at least a score of 1%.
Certificates of Completion
Your certificate of completion will be processed within two (2) business days and can be downloaded/printed from the "View Certificate(s)" link in the course launch portal. Completions are normally reported to the state entities within two (2) business days of the certificate having been issued. There is a state charge of $2.60 per credit hour to report your completion. This fee will be charged prior to accessing the certificate exam.
Non-Resident Producers
Non-residents who have completed their CE requirement in their home state will be deemed compliant for Virginia’s CE requirement based on reciprocity. Compliance with home state requirements will be verified on PDB and non-residents must submit filing fees by February 28 following the end of the compliance period.
CE Exemptions
The following license types are exempt from Virginia CE requirements:
• Limited Lines licensees
• Individuals licensed less than 1 year at the time of the 1st CE compliance date are exempt for the first reporting period
• Individuals may request a waiver of good cause
• Non-residents
• Non-residents selling LTC policies in Virginia must complete a 2-hour course covering VA Partnerships and Medicaid in addition to initial 8-hour training in their resident state

Once the course requirements have been met EducUp will report course completions to Sircon and you may file a renewal application, pay all fees and follow the online renewal process at Sircon.
